KOP Events | Fashion Photographer Alex Covo Gives In Depth Lecture on Maneuvering in the Industry at Apple Store in Soho

Last night I attended an extremely inspiring lecture and discussion lead by fashion photographer Alex Covo. He is known for his simplistic black and white photography, infused with beauty and grit simultaneously. The discussion took place at the Apple Store in Soho and was sponsored by American Photographic Artists, a community organization for professional photographers.

Covo showed us the progression of his career by taking us on an artistic journey through images and video. It was  amazing to see how with time he developed and created such mind blowing visuals.
Covo's message could have not come as a greater time. He spoke on how he lost his passion for fashion photography as he fought to make himself known in the industry. He was overwhelmed by what other industry professionals thought he should be doing and what he should be capturing. Eventually he ended up with a body of work that was in no way a reflection of himself.

As an emerging stylist I battle with this same exact dilemma everyday.  I want to use fashion as a tool to evoke emotion, jump start discussions, and to tell interesting stories through images. I would hate to be sucked into a world filled with fashion but no artistry. I have no problem building a brand around myself but I want to make sure what I produce is a true reflection of King of Posh. I do not want to become lost in my quest to be "found".

Some of the key points of the night included:

DEFINE who you are as an artist
BUILD yourself
Be HONEST with yourself
HEAR your own voice
FOLLOW your vision

Thank you to Apple, APA, and Alex Covo for a great presentation. I think this post will come in handy to my fellow artists in all genres, using all mediums. STAY INSPIRED AND BE INSPIRATIONAL
